Brief History
The Hellenic Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering was officially founded on April 4, 1966 under its first name “HELLENIC SOCIETY FOR SOIL MECHANICS AND FOUNDATIONS”. Its foundation was initiated by Academics from the National Technical University of Athens, Demosthenes Pipas and Antonis Loizos. The admission of the new association as a member of the then-named International Society for Soil Mechanics and Foundations Engineering (now the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering, ISSMGE) was ratified at the International Conference of Soil Mechanics and Foundations in Mexico in 1969. In 1971, the society also became a member of the International Society for Rock Mechanics.
